Emily: West Village

The MVP.

Emily.  We had to plan ahead to get into this place because the two times we were previously in the neighborhood and went by to see if there was room it was a two-hour wait. Reservations were easy enough to get but we did build up the anticipation for this one nonetheless.

When we did get in, I wondered if you had to be under 30 to eat here. Everyone was young, and I'm not sure if that's by design or if it's just cause the loud 2010's hip hop / rap soundtrack just attracts the people who want to get transported back in time by the music of their high school days (seriously, it happened to me with a few songs).

Before going here, I just lumped this place into the 'pizza' category of restaurants in the back of my mind. So, you can imagine my surprise when the first thing the waitress recommended without hesitation was the burger.  I almost laughed because the night before I had the burger at Lure Fish Bar and... I'll admit in my weakness I also had a slice of Prince Street Pizza later that night.  So, when the server tells you that you can't leave without trying the burger and that she "literally wanted to work [there] because of the burger", and the couple next to you looks over and nods in agreement.... it doesn't matter what you ate the night before - you're getting the burger.

Well, we got the burger, and I'm glad we did. Despite my preconceived notion of detroit-style pizza (whatever detroit-style is), the burger was actually the best thing we tried. And based on nearly every other table ordering a burger, I'd say it's the best thing on the menu. It wasn't overly-complicated: it's pretzel bun, cheese, and just the right amount of spicy sauce made it stand out and I'd say it took the cake for the best burger I ate that weekend.  Having said that, the MVP Pizza was good, but if I got another pizza here it would be one with pepperoni, chiles and honey.

All in all, I liked Emily.  If you're in a greasy mood and your group can't decide between burgers or pizza, this is your place. However, if you're set on Burgers OR Pizza, you're better off going somewhere that specializes in one or the other (my burger recommendation is Au Cheval and if you want a similar style of thick square pizza, you can't go wrong with Prince Street). Also, if you plan on going here with a group of 6+ and can plan in advance, I would highly recommend trying to get a reservation downstairs. At first, I thought that's just where the bathrooms were - and they are - but you'll also get a really cool, intimate setting with dim light and old brick archways surrounding your table.

The burger (there's only one on the menu)... it's a juicy one.
