Smoked Salmon Pate
In case you couldn't tell how much I like Piroshky Piroshky by the bite that I already took out of the Salmon Pate before getting the camera - this is one of my favorite small bites at Pike Place. While young girls form a long line in front of the original Starbucks just a few doors down, you'll be lining up for something even better (with a line that moves a whole lot faster). The restaurant itself is more of a small bakery counter, so if you don't see a line outside, it's probably because they're already closed.
Once you do find this place, you'll want to look at the menu posted on the window outside the door. There's really two categories you can choose from - sweet and savory. Sweet and savory what? Piroshky of course. What's a Piroshky? Well, besides the fact that they come from Russia, I don't really know. Hand held pies are the best description I can give them.
Now listen, unless you're allergic to fish, you're going to want to get the salmon piroshky pictured above. If the fact that you can have a fish shaped pastry at pike place market doesn't get you fired up enough about it I don't know what will. I recommend this to everyone - even if they don't love salmon. It doesn't taste fishy at all and seems to have the perfect balance of filling and bread. I've tried other things here, and you can too. You'll probably find one you'll really like. Just do yourself a favor and don't regret skipping the salmon piroshky for the rest of your life.
Bottom line: This is a great addition to your Pike Place food tour because piroshkies are easy to share and won't fill you up too much so you can keep sampling other restaurants at the market.
