Cafe Habana

The Corn (typically comes as one whole piece, but we shared so they split it <3)

My first time visiting New York was during a university trip where we met with several companies over a couple of days.  So, by day I was wearing business casual running from one office to another, but once the end of the business day rolled around it was off to meet up with friends and hit the town.  One night I met up with some friends at Cafe Habana... and it was here I said "I'd move to New York just for the food".

Cafe Habana is pretty much everything you could want in a neighborhood cafe - it fits my vision of a stereotypical, classic New York eatery (apparently Lenny Kravitz thought so too since he filmed a music video here).  So, it passes the vibe check - if the vibe you're going for is small corner cafe with a whole lot of character.

Now to the food.  It seems like they have the corn highlighted on the menu, painted on the window, etc. .... so get the corn. This is the stuff dreams are made of - think the corn in Nacho Libre that gets thrown into that guy's eye.  Now that you've started your meal off on the right foot, you could probably go with whatever your heart desires.  I've had the steak sandwich recommended to me, but personally I'd go with the Cubano or the Citrus Pork Burrito first - you really can't go wrong with either of those.

When I think of Cafe Habana, I think late night spontaneous friend meet up, good conversations, nice service, and solid, no-frills food.  Although it probably won't win any awards for world's best this or that, it really is one of my favorite burritos in the city (just get it fresh, the grilled tortilla makes it).  It's in a great location, and is just as great for a quick bite as it is for a longer stay to catch up with friends.
